Mexicana de Aviación received the first of 20 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft at Felipe Ángeles International Airport on 1 July, marking the operational relaunch of the state-owned carrier. President Claudia Sheinbaum, who led the hand-over ceremony, said the revival of the airline is a “strategic decision” aimed at improving connectivity and social equity rather than an ideological gesture. The Brazilian-built E195-E2, known for lower fuel burn and quieter operations, seats between 108 and 132 passengers. The remaining 19 jets are scheduled to arrive between 2025 and 2027, allowing Mexicana to open routes that private carriers often avoid and to offer lower fares while maintaining what the government says will be a sustainable cost structure. In a progress report presented on 16 July, Mexicana’s director Leobardo Ávila Bojórquez said the airline has carried more than 600,000 passengers so far this year on 14 domestic routes, averaging 79 passengers per flight. The new fleet will underpin expansion plans and is expected to consolidate the carrier’s finances once deliveries are complete. The administration also highlighted advances in related transport projects. Tren Maya, the 1,554-kilometre passenger line across five southeastern states, has transported 1.36 million travellers since December 2023, a 169 % increase year-on-year. The railway’s 34 stations are fully operational, and summer holiday packages that bundle Mexicana flights with train journeys and lodging start at about MXN 16,000, part of a broader strategy to boost regional tourism and demonstrate the viability of state-run infrastructure ventures.
