The Israel Defense Forces and the domestic security agency Shin Bet said Friday they have killed six senior members of Hamas’s naval commando unit in a series of strikes that began in mid-May. According to the military, the commanders orchestrated sea-borne attacks on Israeli targets and helped plan the Oct. 7, 2023 assault. The operations, led by the Israeli Navy with support from the Southern Command and military intelligence, are part of what the IDF described as a broader campaign to degrade Hamas’s maritime capabilities. Separately, the army published drone footage showing troops from the 188th Armored Brigade eliminating an armed cell in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, during recent ground maneuvers. Forces involved in the raid said they destroyed a roughly one-kilometer tunnel and seized weapons and other military equipment. Later on Friday, an Israeli Air Force strike on the village of al-Numairiya in southern Lebanon killed Muhammad Shaib, whom the IDF and Shin Bet accused of smuggling Iranian weapons to Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank and of planning attacks against Israel’s northern region. The claims about Shaib’s role, as well as the casualty figures released by the Israeli military, could not be independently verified. The military also disclosed that a June 7 airstrike in Gaza City killed Fadl Abu al-Ata, described as a regional commander of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, along with explosives engineer Hamad Kamel Abdulaziz Iyad. Palestinian factions have not confirmed the reported deaths.
