Iran has decided against carrying out further military retaliation for the United States’ 12 June strikes on its nuclear facilities, Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said in an interview with NBC News published Thursday. “As long as there is no act of aggression being perpetrated by the United States against us, we will not respond again,” the diplomat stated, adding that Tehran remains open to renewed negotiations with Washington. Takht-Ravanchi stressed, however, that Iran will continue to enrich uranium inside the country. The stockpile is being refined to as much as 60 percent purity—close to weapons-grade—yet he insisted the program is for peaceful purposes and that Iran is prepared to discuss “the scope, the level, the capacity” of its enrichment if talks resume. The comments follow the first direct U.S. bombing of Iranian territory, when fourteen 30,000-pound GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs hit the fortified Fordo facility, causing what officials in Tehran acknowledge was “serious damage” and pushing back the program by up to two years, according to U.S. estimates. Iran responded two days later with missile strikes on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, though no casualties were reported, and a tenuous cease-fire has held since. Takht-Ravanchi said any future dialogue would require U.S. assurances that no further military action will occur while negotiations are underway.
