U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he hopes the United States will not need to carry out further military strikes against Iran and that Tehran has asked to enter new negotiations, signalling a possible easing of tensions after last month’s 12-day conflict. Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump told reporters that discussions with Iranian officials have been scheduled and that "they’re very different now than they were two weeks ago." He added, "I can’t imagine either side wanting to do" another strike. Trump also asserted that U.S. forces employed some of their largest non-nuclear munitions during the recent campaign and urged Iranian leaders to abandon anti-American and anti-Israeli rhetoric. The brief war, which ended under a cease-fire agreement, left more than 600 people dead in Iran, according to Tehran, and 28 fatalities in Israel, Israeli figures show. No date or venue has yet been announced for the planned talks.
