A fresh U.S. intelligence assessment concludes that last month’s American airstrikes on Iran severely damaged only one of three targeted nuclear enrichment facilities, NBC News reported, citing five current and former officials. The review, circulated to lawmakers, the Pentagon and allied governments in recent days, finds that the underground Fordow complex near Qom was “mostly destroyed,” while the Natanz and Isfahan sites suffered limited damage and could restart enrichment within several months. Officials briefed on the findings say destruction at Fordow could delay Iran’s ability to enrich uranium there by as much as two years. By contrast, the fortified installations at Natanz and Isfahan—some of whose tunnels lie beyond the reach of the 30,000-pound GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs used in the raid—were only degraded. The assessment contrasts with administration claims that all three facilities were rendered inoperable. The report also reveals that U.S. Central Command had drawn up a far more extensive, multi-week campaign against six Iranian nuclear and missile sites. President Donald Trump rejected that option and ordered the single-night operation, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” after advisers warned of the risk of a protracted conflict and higher casualties, according to the officials. Responding to the NBC account, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the strikes “totally obliterated Iran’s nuclear capabilities,” while Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell insisted the facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan were “completely and totally obliterated.” Reuters said it could not independently verify the assessment. The divergent readings of the operation’s effectiveness are likely to shape deliberations in Washington and Jerusalem over whether follow-on strikes are necessary if Tehran rebuilds or refuses to resume nuclear negotiations. Iran maintains that its programme is purely for civilian purposes.
