According to a United Nations report, Iran executed at least 975 people in 2024, marking the highest number of executions since 2015. This figure represents a 14% increase compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2025, Iranian human rights organizations reported at least 612 executions, a 119% rise from the same period last year. During the 12-day conflict with Israel in June 2025, Iran executed 21 people, including six accused of spying for Israel. Iranian authorities have also intensified internal security measures following the conflict, arresting over 1,000 individuals, including more than 700 on espionage charges related to Israel. Additionally, Iranian forces seized around 10,000 drones in Tehran. The crackdown has involved mass arrests, house raids, and executions, particularly targeting Kurdish regions. Human rights groups and UN officials have expressed concern over reports of widespread detentions, forced disappearances, and executions. Furthermore, Afghan migrants in Iran have faced increased deportations and harsh treatment, including passport confiscations and detention under poor conditions. The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran has voiced worries about these developments.
