A hacking collective that cyberspace investigators say operates on behalf of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has resurfaced, threatening to publish a new cache of emails taken from President Donald Trump’s inner circle. In private chats reviewed by Reuters, the group, which calls itself “Robert,” said it is holding roughly 100 gigabytes of correspondence and may attempt to sell the material. Accounts said to be compromised include those of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Trump lawyer Lindsey Halligan, long-time adviser Roger Stone and adult-film actress Stormy Daniels. The same hackers circulated a smaller batch of campaign emails to journalists before the 2024 election; Reuters authenticated portions of that earlier leak. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the intrusion as “an unconscionable cyber-attack,” while FBI Director Kash Patel warned that anyone involved would be “investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency called the operation a “calculated smear campaign” aimed at discrediting the president and pledged to track down those responsible. The Justice Department charged three members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps last September with orchestrating the Robert operation, but the hackers claimed to have retired after Trump’s election victory. Their reappearance follows a 12-day air war between Israel and Iran that ended with U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities on 21 June, a conflict analysts say may have spurred Tehran to seek asymmetric forms of retaliation. Federal agencies have urged businesses and critical-infrastructure operators to remain vigilant, warning that Iranian-linked actors could escalate cyber activity even as diplomatic efforts continue in the Middle East.
