Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and senior advisor to Supreme Leader Imam Khamenei, embarked on his first official visit since assuming office, traveling to Iraq and Lebanon. In Baghdad, Larijani met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the Iraqi President, and Foreign Minister to discuss and sign a bilateral security agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two countries. The agreement was described as important, although specific details have not been disclosed. During his visit, Larijani also paid respects at the memorials of General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. His visit to Iraq occurs amid U.S. pressure on the Iraqi government to limit Iranian influence. Following Iraq, Larijani proceeded to Beirut, Lebanon, where he was warmly received and met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon noted that Larijani’s visit comes at a sensitive time for Lebanon, with Larijani expected to present Iran’s position in upcoming meetings. The Iraqi Prime Minister concurrently emphasized support for Syria’s stability and sovereignty during a meeting with Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed Bashir.
