Israeli settlers set fire to and vandalised an Israel Defense Forces security installation in the Binyamin Brigade sector of the occupied West Bank in the early hours of 30 June, the military said. The compound, valued at several million shekels and equipped with cameras and other surveillance systems, is used to detect and foil attacks in the Ramallah area. The IDF warned that the destruction “poses a danger to the security of the residents.” According to photographs released by the army, the attackers sprayed graffiti reading “Revenge of shooting, greetings from Beit She’an,” a reference to the wounding of a 14-year-old Israeli boy two days earlier. Military spokespeople said settlers also damaged vehicles and confronted soldiers. Police and fire-service units have opened a criminal investigation; no arrests had been announced as of Tuesday evening. The assault drew unusually broad condemnation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel “cannot tolerate the torching of military facilities,” while far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called the perpetrators “criminals” whose actions “cross a red line.” The IDF said it expected security agencies to “bring to justice Israeli civilians who harm security personnel.” The incident caps a spike in settler violence in the West Bank. On 2 July, local monitors reported two Palestinians injured when settlers stoned the village of Susya in the Masafer Yatta region, and rights groups said settlers had erected a fifth unauthorized outpost near Jericho within days. Palestinian health officials count nearly 1,000 deaths in the territory since October 2023 amid rising clashes involving settlers, the army and Palestinian residents.
