Senior Christian clerics led by Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa travelled to Taybeh on 14 July with diplomats from more than 20 countries to survey damage from recent attacks blamed on Israeli settlers. Standing outside the 5th-century Church of St. George, whose outer wall and surrounding fields were set ablaze on 7 July, the delegation condemned what they called a pattern of intimidation against the West Bank’s only entirely Christian town and urged Israeli authorities to investigate why police failed to respond to local emergency calls. Church leaders said settlers have also torched homes, destroyed crops and grazed cattle on Palestinian land around Taybeh, actions they argue are driving residents to consider emigration. “These actions are a direct and intentional threat to our community and its religious heritage,” Theophilos III told reporters. Pizzaballa warned that the West Bank is becoming “a lawless area” where “the only law is power.” Rights groups say settler violence has risen sharply since the Gaza conflict erupted in late 2023. About 50,000 Christian Palestinians remain in Jerusalem and the West Bank, living alongside some 700,000 settlers in territory captured by Israel in 1967. The visiting clerics and diplomats called for accountability for the perpetrators and for stronger protection of religious sites, cautioning that failure to act risks accelerating the exodus of Christians from the Holy Land.
