An Israeli airstrike on 2 July killed Dr. Marwan Al-Sultan, director of Gaza’s Indonesian Hospital, while he was at his apartment in the Tal Al-Hawa district west of Gaza City. Gaza’s Health Ministry said the blast also claimed the lives of Al-Sultan’s wife and five of their children. The strike struck near the so-called 17 Junction along the coastal Rashid road at about 2:15 p.m. local time. Al-Sultan, one of Gaza’s last practicing cardiologists and an assistant professor at the Islamic University of Gaza, is the 70th health-care worker killed in Israeli attacks over the past 50 days, according to the monitoring group Healthcare Workers Watch. The United Nations estimates that more than 1,400 medical personnel have died since the conflict erupted in October 2023, and only 17 of the territory’s 36 hospitals remain even partially operational, none of them in the north. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a “key terrorist” in Gaza City and that claims of harm to uninvolved civilians are under review. Gaza’s Health Ministry condemned the attack as part of what it called a systematic campaign against medical staff and infrastructure. Jakarta’s Foreign Ministry and senior Indonesian lawmakers expressed “deep sorrow” over the death of the hospital chief, whose facility was financed by Indonesian donors and had already been shuttered by earlier bombardments. Aid agencies warned that the loss further weakens an already collapsing health system struggling to treat thousands of war-wounded residents.
