Israeli forces have intensified air, land and naval operations across the Gaza Strip since 14 August, striking residential buildings, schools and aid distribution points in Gaza City, the central refugee camps and southern districts. Artillery, drone and helicopter fire were reported in the Zeitoun, Al-Rimal, Jabalia and Al-Sabra neighbourhoods, while separate strikes hit displacement tents in Al-Mawasi near Khan Younis and in Sheikh Ajlin, and a fishing boat off Gaza’s coast. Hospitals in Gaza said they received 51 dead and 369 wounded during the 24-hour period that ended on the afternoon of 15 August. Palestinian medical officials reported at least 14 further fatalities on 16 August, including three people queueing for humanitarian aid, and nine others killed in a separate incident in northern Gaza. A fisherman was killed and a colleague wounded by naval gunfire, while drone and artillery attacks on the Al-Bureij camp and nearby areas left additional casualties. Gaza Civil Defense stated that Israeli units are using remotely operated explosives to level homes in the Zeitoun district, where it estimates some 50,000 civilians remain. Spokespeople described the situation as “very difficult,” citing limited access to food, water and medical care amid continuing demolitions and shelling. The escalation follows Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent declaration that Israel will move to seize Gaza City and adjoining “central camps” as part of a wider campaign to dismantle Hamas. Israeli media outlets and regional broadcasters said the army has begun broadening its ground and aerial assaults in eastern Gaza City, a move that humanitarian agencies warn will worsen civilian displacement and impede already fragile aid deliveries.
A breathtaking moment captures the direct targeting by an Israeli tank of civilians who only wanted to check how far the army’s vehicles were from them, so they could decide whether to stay or evacuate. Residents fear that Gaza City will be turned into a pile of rubble, just https://t.co/z46fhl1xBV
