Israeli military forces carried out a series of drone and air strikes on Syrian army positions near the town of al-Kiswah, about 20 km south of Damascus, on 26–27 August. Syrian state broadcaster Al-Ekhbariya and Reuters said the attacks killed six Syrian soldiers and wounded at least three others. Earlier reports had cited three fatalities in a separate strike closer to the capital. Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the operation as a “severe military incursion,” saying the soldiers were hit while investigating surveillance equipment discovered on Jabal al-Mana’a. The ministry called on the UN Security Council to intervene, a demand echoed by Saudi Arabia and Jordan, which separately denounced what they described as Israel’s continuing violations of Syrian sovereignty. Late on 27 August, additional Israeli raids hit former army barracks in the same area, and Syrian army sources reported about 15 strikes followed by helicopter landings that lasted roughly two hours. Syrian media said Israeli forces also advanced briefly in parts of Quneitra and Suwayda earlier in the week. Israel has not commented on the incidents. The escalation comes as U.S.-mediated talks aim to forge a security arrangement for southern Syria. The latest bloodshed underscores the fragile state of the border area and the risk that the negotiations could be derailed by further military action.
