Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, delivering a signed recommendation letter during a White House dinner on 7 July. In the document, dated 1 July, Netanyahu credits Trump with brokering the 2020 Abraham Accords and supporting a ceasefire announced last month between Israel and Iran, saying those efforts 'created new opportunities to broaden the circle of peace and normalization' in the Middle East. The public nomination comes less than two weeks after Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, told reporters at UN headquarters that Trump 'deserves a Nobel Peace Prize' for the same ceasefire. Trump has welcomed several such endorsements in recent years, including proposals from U.S. lawmakers and foreign officials, but no bid has advanced so far. Under Nobel rules, nominations must reach the Norwegian Nobel Committee by 1 February to be considered for that year; Netanyahu’s submission therefore applies to the 2026 award. The committee keeps its candidate list confidential for 50 years, and endorsements do not guarantee a place on the shortlist, which this year already includes 338 names. The 2025 laureate will be announced in Oslo on 10 October.
