On August 20, 2025, approximately 14 to 17 Palestinian fighters launched a coordinated attack on an Israeli military site in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip. The assailants emerged from a tunnel network and targeted a unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), specifically the Kfir Brigade, with the intent to abduct Israeli soldiers. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least nine Palestinian fighters, with the remainder retreating underground. Israeli forces reported three soldiers wounded, including one seriously injured and two with moderate injuries. Additionally, a separate ambush by Hamas in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, led to the deaths of five Israeli soldiers from the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda Battalion of the Kfir Brigade and 14 others wounded. Israeli helicopters evacuated the injured soldiers during the engagements. The Hamas military wing claimed responsibility for the attacks, which represent a rare and organized attempt to infiltrate Israeli-controlled areas in Gaza. Israeli media confirmed ongoing searches for the remaining attackers who fled after the clashes.
