President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Edan Alexander, the last living American hostage released from Gaza, to the Oval Office on 3 July. The 21-year-old New Jersey-born dual U.S.–Israeli citizen spent 584 days in Hamas captivity before his 12 May release as part of a U.S.-brokered agreement. During a roughly half-hour conversation, Alexander expressed gratitude for the administration’s role in securing his freedom and urged the president to help broker a deal for the roughly 50 hostages who remain in Gaza. According to people familiar with the meeting, he told Trump that his captors treated him noticeably better after Trump’s November election victory. A White House statement said the administration “will not stop until every hostage is reunited with their family.” Alexander was serving in the Israel Defense Forces when he was abducted during the 7 Oct 2023 Hamas attack. His White House visit comes days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled meeting with Trump, as Washington presses Israel and Hamas to agree to a U.S.-drafted 60-day cease-fire and comprehensive hostage deal.
