The United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday it has documented at least 798 deaths in Gaza between 27 May and 7 July among people trying to obtain humanitarian assistance. Spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva that the tally is based on hospital records, cemetery logs, non-governmental organisations and information from families and local authorities. According to the UN, 615 of the victims were killed in the vicinity of food distribution centres run by the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, while a further 183 were fatally shot or otherwise slain on routes used by aid convoys organised by the UN and other relief groups. Shamdasani said “most of the injuries are gunshot injuries,” adding that the pattern raises serious concerns about respect for international humanitarian law. The GHF rejected the figures as “false and misleading”, asserting that the deadliest incidents occurred near UN convoys. The Israel Defense Forces said it had revised field instructions after reviewing the incidents and that its troops fire only warning shots or respond to militant threats; it also blamed some shootings on Hamas. The UN, which refuses to partner with GHF, has called the foundation’s distribution model “inherently unsafe”. Alongside the casualties, aid agencies report worsening hunger. Médecins Sans Frontières said severe malnutrition cases at its Gaza City clinic have tripled since May, warning that food prices—such as sugar at about $766 per kilogram—are far beyond the reach of most residents. The UN reiterated that civilians should not have to choose “between being shot or being fed.”
