Israeli troops opened fire on Palestinians waiting for food near the Al-Shakoush aid distribution point outside Rafah early Saturday, killing between 27 and 30 people and injuring about 180, according to Gaza’s civil-defence agency and hospital officials. The victims had gathered at a site run under a United States-backed aid programme that operates outside the United Nations’ relief system. The shooting was part of a broader surge of violence that, by late afternoon, had pushed Saturday’s death toll in the enclave to at least 98, hospital sources told Al Jazeera. Separate air-strikes and shelling hit homes, clinics and markets in Deir al-Balah, Gaza City and Khan Younis, killing scores of people, including children, the reports said. Attacks on aid lines have become increasingly frequent. The Gaza Government Media Office said Israeli forces carried out 59 "massacres" between 3 and 7 July, leaving 288 people dead and 1,088 wounded; ninety-nine of those killed, it said, were seeking food. The same office had earlier documented 26 large-scale attacks in the 48 hours to 3 July that claimed more than 300 lives. Cumulatively, Gaza’s Health Ministry puts the death toll from Israel’s nine-month campaign at more than 57,882, with 138,095 people injured, figures the United Nations continues to regard as the best available. Humanitarian agencies warn that large parts of the territory face famine-level food shortages and that most of the population has been displaced multiple times. The Israeli military says it is targeting Hamas militants and infrastructure and did not immediately address the latest reports of civilian deaths. Indirect cease-fire talks in Doha have stalled, Palestinian officials say, amid disputes over an Israeli troop withdrawal and the flow of humanitarian aid.
