The United Nations says at least 1,370 Palestinians have been killed since late May while waiting in lines for food deliveries in the Gaza Strip, underscoring how humanitarian aid sites have turned into lethal zones amid Israel’s war with Hamas. Medical sources reported further fatalities on Saturday, including 12 people shot dead near the Nitzarim corridor and four others in a separate incident at the same location. Gaza’s health ministry warns that famine is accelerating, recording 156 deaths from starvation or malnutrition—90 of them children—as hospitals run out of supplies. A Reuters account from Gaza City described doctors struggling to evacuate an eight-year-old girl weighing just 11 kilograms after her sister, who suffered similar deprivation, died on 20 July. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini criticised foreign airdrops as “100 times more expensive” than road deliveries and said about 6,000 aid-laden trucks remain stalled outside Gaza awaiting Israeli permission. He urged the reopening of land crossings to “flood Gaza with aid” and halt the spread of famine. Violence continues in parallel with the hunger crisis. Local officials said Israeli airstrikes killed 111 Palestinians on Friday and another 23 people by Saturday morning, taking the overall wartime toll reported by Gaza authorities to more than 60,000 dead and 147,000 wounded since October 2023. International responses have so far been limited. France dropped 40 tonnes of food into Gaza on Friday, but aid groups note the enclave needs roughly 400 truck-loads daily to reverse famine conditions. The World Food Programme said it still lacks the clearances required for large-scale deliveries despite Israel’s recent pledge to ease access.
