The White House said the United States remains in contact with Iran through Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, who has spoken with Iranian officials both directly and via intermediaries. “The administration, and namely our special envoy Steve Witkoff, has been in communication both directly and indirectly with the Iranians,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Monday, adding that these exchanges are ongoing. Leavitt stressed that President Donald Trump has not personally engaged with Iranian counterparts. The clarification came hours after Trump posted on social media that he “is not talking” to Tehran, in contrast with the administration’s broader diplomatic outreach. The conversation channels follow U.S. air-strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities carried out more than a week ago, actions that heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. Leavitt declined to detail the scope of the talks or whether they could evolve beyond nuclear issues, but said the lines of communication remain open.
