Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” the Phil Lord- and Christopher Miller-directed adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel. The footage, released 30 June, shows Ryan Gosling as middle-school science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spacecraft about 12 light-years from Earth with orders to reverse a solar-dimming event threatening human extinction. The studio has set a 20 March 2026 theatrical and IMAX launch for the film. The screenplay is by Drew Goddard and the visuals are lensed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser. Sandra Hüller co-stars as mission overseer Eva Stratt, and the trailer offers a first glimpse of Grace’s eventual alien ally, Rocky. Gosling, Lord, Miller, Weir and Amy Pascal are among the producers. Early interest has been brisk: analytics firm WaveMetrix estimates the trailer generated roughly 400 million global views in its first week, the largest debut for an original, non-sequel film and a record for Amazon MGM Studios. The response bolsters expectations for Lord and Miller’s return to feature directing after an 11-year hiatus.
