Lionsgate said it will distribute Mel Gibson’s sequel to his 2004 blockbuster “The Passion of the Christ” as two films, titled “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One” and “Part Two.” The studio plans to open Part One on Good Friday, 26 March 2027, and Part Two 40 days later on Ascension Day, 6 May 2027. Gibson is directing and producing the project through Icon Productions with long-time partner Bruce Davey. The filmmaker has indicated that Jim Caviezel is expected to reprise his role as Jesus, though casting has not been formally announced. “The Passion of the Christ” earned about $370 million in North America and more than $610 million worldwide on a reported $30 million budget, making it one of the most profitable independent films ever released. Production on the two-part follow-up is slated to begin late next summer at European locations.
