Walt Disney Studios has updated its release calendar, slotting Searchlight Pictures’ comedy-drama “Rental Family” for a November 21, 2025 theatrical debut. Directed by Japan-born filmmaker Hikari, the Tokyo-set picture stars Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser alongside Takehiro Hira and Akira Emoto. The story follows a struggling American actor who takes work with a “rental family” service, standing in for relatives at clients’ request. Principal photography took place in Japan last spring, and the film is viewed internally as a potential awards-season play, marking Fraser’s first leading role since his 2023 Academy Award for “The Whale.” Disney has also earmarked February 20, 2026 for the release of “Psycho Killer,” a 20th Century Studios horror-thriller written by “Se7en” scribe Andrew Kevin Walker and directed by Gavin Polone. Georgina Campbell stars as a police officer pursuing a serial murderer dubbed the “Satanic Slasher” after the killing of her state-trooper husband, played by Logan Miller. The pair of dates fills key slots in Disney’s pipeline—late-year prestige positioning for 2025 and a prime genre berth over the 2026 Presidents’ Day frame—signalling the studio’s continued effort to balance awards contenders with commercial thrillers across its Searchlight and 20th Century labels.
