Netflix has released first-look images and confirmed release dates for “The Ballad of a Small Player,” the latest thriller from Oscar-winning director Edward Berger. The film will debut in select U.S. cinemas on 15 October, reach U.K. and Irish theaters on 17 October, and stream worldwide on Netflix from 29 October. Adapted by screenwriter Rowan Joffe from Lawrence Osborne’s novel, the Macau-set drama stars Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle, a high-stakes gambler whose mounting debts force him into hiding until a chance encounter promises a way out. The ensemble cast features Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings and Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton. Produced by Mike Goodridge’s Good Chaos, Berger’s Nine Hours and Matthew James Wilkinson’s Stigma Films, the project reunites Berger with several of his “All Quiet on the Western Front” collaborators, including cinematographer James Friend and composer Volker Bertelmann. The fall rollout places the picture squarely in awards-season contention as Farrell rides recent Emmy recognition for HBO Max’s “The Penguin.”
