The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Berks and Montgomery counties in southeastern Pennsylvania shortly before 5 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, July 1, after radar detected rotation within a fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms. The alert, which expired at 5:15 p.m., came amid a broader outbreak of heavy rain and damaging winds sweeping across the Philadelphia region. Although the tornado threat eased, flash-flood warnings remained in effect for at least six Pennsylvania counties—including Bucks, Chester, Lancaster and Philadelphia—while Ocean County, New Jersey was placed under a similar alert through the evening. Forecasters expect 1–3 inches of additional rainfall, with localized totals up to 4 inches on ground already saturated by storms a day earlier. Wind gusts topping 60 mph are possible, and a severe-thunderstorm watch covers much of the area until 9 p.m. Rivers and creeks are rising quickly. The National Weather Service projects the Brandywine Creek at Chadds Ford to crest overnight at roughly 10.2 feet, above its 9-foot flood stage, and reports the Conestoga River in Lancaster already above flood stage at 11.7 feet with a peak near 12.1 feet expected later Tuesday. A regional flood watch extends until 2 a.m. Wednesday, and officials are urging residents to stay off inundated roads and remain prepared for additional warnings as storms continue to track east.
