The Los Angeles Lakers evened their record at the California Classic with a 103-83 win over the Miami Heat in San Francisco. Second-year guard Bronny James, held out of the opener, contributed 10 points, two rebounds and a steal in just 11 minutes, punctuating his stint with a break-away dunk and two three-pointers. The bulk of the scoring came from forward Cole Swider, who poured in 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while reserve Darius Bazley added 16 points and nine boards and DJ Steward chipped in 14. Los Angeles shot 57% from the field and converted Heat turnovers into 27 points to secure the wire-to-wire victory, dropping Miami to 1-1 in the showcase. In the nightcap, the San Antonio Spurs edged the Golden State Warriors 90-88 to pick up their first win of the tournament. G-League standout David Jones-Garcia paced San Antonio with 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting, including four makes from long range. Rookie guard Will Richard, acquired by Golden State after the club moved up three draft spots to No. 56, impressed in his first professional action with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals, while fellow rookie LJ Cryer hit five three-pointers en route to 19 points. Richard’s late triple cut the deficit to one, but his buzzer-beating attempt rimmed out, leaving the Warriors winless through two games.
