The Washington Wizards have reached an agreement to acquire forward Cam Whitmore from the Houston Rockets in exchange for two future second-round draft picks, according to people familiar with the matter. The transaction will be folded into a broader series of offseason moves and cannot become official until the NBA’s moratorium on player movement is lifted at noon Eastern on Sunday. Whitmore, 20, was selected 20th overall in the 2023 draft and averaged 10.8 points on 46% shooting across two seasons with Houston. The Maryland native was named the 2023 Summer League MVP and notched a career-best 34 points on 68% shooting earlier this year. The deal extends Washington’s youth-centric overhaul. On draft night, the Wizards used the No. 21 pick—acquired from the Utah Jazz in a trade that sent guard Walter Clayton to Salt Lake City—to select 6-foot-8 Illinois wing Will Riley. Whitmore and Riley join a core that already features recent lottery selections Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly and Tre Johnson, giving Washington seven rotation players aged 21 or younger. With several rookie-scale contracts on the books, the Wizards could have upward of $100 million in salary-cap space next summer, positioning the front office to add veteran talent around its rapidly expanding collection of prospects.
