A chartered tour bus carrying about 52 people overturned on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, roughly 30 miles east of Buffalo, on Friday afternoon, killing at least four passengers, including a child, and injuring dozens more, New York State Police said. The vehicle was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls when it lost control while travelling eastbound, veered into the median and came to rest in a roadside ditch. Authorities describe the incident as a mass-casualty event, with some occupants ejected from the coach and others trapped in the wreckage. State Police spokesperson Trooper James O’Callaghan told reporters that most of the passengers were tourists from India, China and the Philippines and that the driver survived and is cooperating with investigators. Multiple ambulances and at least three Mercy Flight helicopters ferried victims to area hospitals, including 16 patients received by Erie County Medical Center as of mid-afternoon. All lanes of the New York State Thruway between exits 48A and 49 were closed for hours, and Governor Kathy Hochul said her office is coordinating with local officials as the investigation continues into the cause of the crash.
