Karachi has experienced continuous heavy rainfall since August 19, 2025, causing widespread flooding, waterlogging, and damage to the city's infrastructure. The poor drainage system has exacerbated the situation, leading to submerged roads and disrupted traffic flow. The rains have resulted in at least 15 deaths in Karachi due to related incidents. On August 21, a massive explosion occurred at a fireworks warehouse on MA Jinnah Road in Karachi's Saddar area, injuring around 28 people and killing five. The blast caused a fire that damaged a nearby girls' school and led to ongoing rescue and recovery operations. Authorities have registered a case regarding the explosion, and compensation of 10 million Pakistani rupees has been announced for the families of the deceased. The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall in Karachi through August 23, with more heavy rains expected from August 24 onward. The persistent monsoon rains have also caused floods and landslides in other parts of Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Punjab, including a glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan's Ghizer district that resulted in severe flooding. Relief efforts by the Pakistani military and local authorities are ongoing in affected areas. Additionally, Karachi has seen prolonged power outages and traffic accidents linked to the flooding, including a fatal incident at the Drigh Road underpass that claimed three lives. The mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, has urged preparedness for further rains and highlighted the challenges posed by administrative inefficiencies in managing the crisis.
