Karachi and several regions in Pakistan have been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall since August 20, 2025, leading to widespread waterlogging and flooding. The city's drainage system has been unable to cope, resulting in water accumulation on major roads and underpasses, severely disrupting traffic and damaging infrastructure. Areas such as Gulbahar and Nazimabad in Karachi have faced sewage overflow and deteriorated road conditions. The Met Office has forecasted ongoing rain in Karachi until at least August 25, with heavy rains expected from August 24 onwards. Other parts of Pakistan, including Hyderabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Swat, Mansehra, Lahore, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have also reported flooding, landslides, and power outages. The Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers have risen to flood levels, causing submersion of villages and destruction of crops, particularly in Punjab and Bahawalnagar. In Gilgit-Baltistan's Ghizer district, glacial lake outburst floods have caused severe damage. Meanwhile, India has issued a rare flood alert to Pakistan via its High Commission in Islamabad regarding potential major flooding in the Jammu area, bypassing the suspended Indus Waters Treaty mechanism. This marks the first official contact between the two countries since the May 2025 conflict. India has also released water into the Ravi and Sutlej rivers, exacerbating flood conditions downstream in Pakistan. The Pakistani government and authorities continue to monitor the situation amid ongoing monsoon rains, which have resulted in at least 798 deaths nationwide, with adverse weather expected to persist in the coming weeks.
