Pakistan and Iran signed 12 agreements and memorandums of understanding in Islamabad on Sunday during the first official visit of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Iranian leader witnessed the signing ceremony, which covered cooperation in plant protection, joint use of the Mirjaveh–Taftan border gate, railways, information technology, climate and meteorology, maritime safety, judicial assistance, and tourism. Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Atabak earlier agreed to boost annual bilateral trade to $8 billion, up from about $2.8 billion in the fiscal year that ended in June. Sharif said the two neighbors ultimately aim to lift commerce to $10 billion and accelerate work on a planned free-trade agreement and expanded cross-border infrastructure. The flurry of accords signals a renewed push by Islamabad and Tehran to deepen economic ties and capitalize on their shared 900-kilometer border, even as Iranian trade remains constrained by U.S. sanctions. The agreements will move to implementation phases over the coming months, officials from both sides said.
