Tractor trailer cab crashes through Delaware Memorial Bridge, plunges into river https://t.co/7T97Iaqujh
A tractor-trailer cab plunged off the Delaware Memorial Bridge into the Delaware River early Friday, triggering a multi-agency search and recovery operation. The Delaware River and Bay Authority said the bobtail tractor was heading southbound into Delaware when it veered across three lanes at about 3:40 a.m., struck a concrete pad near the bridge’s Delaware anchorage and shattered a barrier before falling into the river. Divers located the cab in roughly 20 feet of water, but authorities have not confirmed how many people were inside and are still searching for the driver. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and the cause of the sudden lane change remains under investigation. Response teams from New Castle County Emergency Management, the State of Delaware Special Operations Dive Team, the Delaware State Police Marine Unit, Wilmington Police and the U.S. Coast Guard converged on the scene. One southbound lane remained closed for most of the morning; bridge officials said traffic delays had cleared by around 9 a.m. while the probe into the accident continues.
