The Philippine House of Representatives has formally requested the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling that barred the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, who faces allegations related to an apparent threat to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The House maintains that the impeachment did not violate the constitutional one-year bar. Ahead of a Senate vote expected to terminate the trial, the Supreme Court has asked Vice President Duterte and associated lawyers to comment on motions for reconsideration of the decision. A group led by former Supreme Court justices Antonio Carpio and Conchita Carpio Morales has also urged the Court to preserve the status quo in the impeachment proceedings. The Supreme Court reiterated that its decision to halt the trial is immediately executory. In the Senate, motions to dismiss or archive the impeachment case have been filed by Senator Rodante Marcoleta, a Duterte ally, citing the Supreme Court ruling. However, other senators, including Minority Leader Tito Sotto and Risa Hontiveros, have urged caution, with calls to await the Supreme Court's final decision on the motions for reconsideration and to reconvene the impeachment court. The Senate vote on the Supreme Court's decision is scheduled for August 6, 2025.
