The Portuguese government is considering recognizing the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, following similar moves by France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Canada has announced it will recognize Palestine conditionally, requiring the Palestinian Authority to implement major reforms including elections in 2026 without Hamas participation and full demilitarization. This decision has drawn criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that Canada's bid to recognize Palestine could complicate or derail ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and Canada, making it "very hard" to reach a trade deal ahead of the August 1 deadline. Meanwhile, Canada has actively provided humanitarian aid to Gaza, conducting airdrops of supplies amid the ongoing Israeli military assault. The Canadian Armed Forces delivered additional aid alongside other countries such as Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Germany, Belgium, France, and the United Kingdom, with Ottawa accusing Israel of violating international law by blocking supplies to Gaza.
