Club América captain and leading scorer Henry Martín will wear the club’s famed No. 9 shirt beginning with the Liga MX Apertura 2025 season, ending an eight-year spell in which he was identified with No. 21. The team confirmed the change on 10 July, noting that the jersey had remained unused since Roger Martínez’s departure in 2023. Martín, 31, described the switch as “inevitable,” thanking supporters for their backing during a period that yielded 116 goals and four league titles for América. The club trailed the announcement with an enigmatic video, briefly fuelling speculation about the striker’s future before clarifying it was a renumbering rather than a transfer. The move forms part of a broader refresh of squad numbers that also returned Alejandro Zendejas to No. 10. Martín is still rehabilitating a tendon injury and is unlikely to travel for América’s season opener against FC Juárez on Friday, but the club expects the new number to symbolise his continued leadership once he returns to the pitch.
