Google expanded its generative-AI lineup on Wednesday, introducing photo-to-video creation and other image-manipulation tools to two of its largest consumer platforms, Google Photos and YouTube Shorts. Both services now tap the company’s Veo 2 model to animate a single still image into a short video and apply new AI effects, with support for the newer Veo 3 model promised later this summer. In Google Photos, users in the United States can immediately convert any picture into a six-second clip by choosing between “Subtle movements” and “I’m feeling lucky” prompts. A separate Remix feature—rolling out in the coming weeks—will re-render photos as anime frames, comics, sketches or 3D animations. The tools, which embed Google’s SynthID watermark, will be grouped under a new “Create” tab that begins appearing in the U.S. version of the app in August. Google Photos counts more than 1.5 billion users worldwide, giving the experimental capabilities a vast testbed. For YouTube Shorts, the same photo-to-video option and a set of generative effects that turn doodles into artwork or place subjects underwater will become available over the next week in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with more regions to follow. Shorts creators will also see an AI Playground hub consolidating these features. Google says Shorts now attracts over 200 billion daily views, underscoring the potential reach of the new tools.
