Seventeen-year-old Quincy Wilson clocked 44.10 seconds to win the men’s 400 meters at the Ed Murphey Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, setting a world under-18 best and American U18 record, according to preliminary marks released after the race. Wilson, who had already owned the age-group record, lowered his previous mark by 0.29 seconds and defeated a field of professional athletes; U.S. Olympian Bryce Deadmon finished second in 44.39 seconds. The performance places Wilson second on the world under-20 all-time list behind 1988 Olympic champion Steve Lewis (43.87). USA Track & Field said the record is subject to verification by its records committee and World Athletics. Wilson’s run continues a breakout season that included victories at the New Balance Nationals high-school meet earlier this year.
