Apple is preparing its most aggressive iPhone redesign cycle in more than a decade, planning three successive years of major hardware changes, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The roadmap begins this September with the debut of the iPhone 17 lineup and a new ultra-thin “iPhone 17 Air,” followed by the company’s first foldable handset in 2026 and a curved-glass, 20th-anniversary model in 2027. The iPhone 17 Air, expected to be unveiled at an event reportedly scheduled for 9 Sept 2025, will replace the current 16 Plus. Gurman says Apple has miniaturised internal components to achieve a notably slimmer and lighter chassis, though the design trade-offs include a smaller battery and a single rear camera. The broader iPhone 17 family is also rumoured to add a 120 Hz, 6.3-inch display to the base model and introduce reverse wireless charging on the Pro variants. In 2026 Apple intends to enter the foldable market with a book-style device internally codenamed “V68.” The handset is tipped to feature a roughly 8-inch internal screen, a 5.5-inch cover display, four cameras, Touch ID embedded in the power button and Apple’s own C2 cellular modem. It will eschew a physical SIM tray in favour of eSIM only and target a starting price near $2,000. Suppliers are expected to ramp production early next year, with launch slated for the second half of 2026. The overhaul culminates in 2027 with a special 20th-anniversary iPhone that replaces the current squared-off frame with curved glass on all edges. Few technical details are known, but the redesign is intended to showcase the “Liquid Glass” aesthetic Apple is weaving throughout iOS 26 and beyond. The multi-year strategy is aimed at reinvigorating iPhone demand after several flat cycles and offsetting higher production costs tied to U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. Successive headline-grabbing form-factor changes would give Apple fresh marketing firepower as rivals expand their own foldable and AI-centric offerings.
