France’s Benjamin Bonzi produced the first major upset of Wimbledon 2025, defeating world No. 9 Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 on Court 2 to reach the second round. The 29-year-old, ranked 64th, handled two tiebreaks and broke serve twice in the fourth set to close out the two-time semifinalist after just over three hours of play. The loss is Medvedev’s first in the opening round at Wimbledon and extends a difficult season at the majors: the former world No. 1 fell in the second round of the Australian Open and the first round of Roland-Garros. Monday’s defeat is expected to drop him to roughly No. 14 in the ATP rankings, his lowest position in more than five years. For Bonzi, the result marks only his second victory over a top-10 player and his first at a Grand Slam. “This is my first top-10 win in a Slam; it’s very special,” he said in his on-court interview. Bonzi will meet Australia’s Jordan Thompson, the world No. 44, in the next round.
