French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump intends to press for a cease-fire in Ukraine when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on 15 August. Speaking after successive video conferences with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Macron told reporters that Washington’s “will is to obtain a cease-fire” at the forthcoming encounter. Macron added that, according to Trump, any questions concerning Ukrainian territory “can only be negotiated with Ukraine,” underscoring that Kyiv alone will decide on possible concessions. The French leader delivered his remarks from Fort de Brégançon following consultations with European leaders aimed at coordinating positions ahead of the Trump-Putin talks, the first direct meeting between the two presidents since 2019.
