NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the security assurances offered by the United States to Ukraine as “a major step,” saying they provide an important signal of long-term Western commitment to Kyiv’s defence. Rutte told reporters that more work is needed to spell out the scope and mechanisms of the guarantees, adding that consultations among allies will continue in the coming days. He said discussions would cover the type of support and conditions attached to it, with the goal of reaching a clear framework swiftly. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Kyiv is ready to enter bilateral talks on the package, according to Rutte. The NATO chief characterised today’s meetings as “very successful” and expressed confidence that detailed arrangements can be finalised soon.
