Russia launched a large-scale overnight drone attack on Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, with local officials reporting that at least 20 Shahed/Geran-2 unmanned aircraft struck port and energy infrastructure in the city of Izmail. The assault ignited a massive blaze at the Triton oil depot, destroying two fuel tanks and severely damaging a third, and set fire to the Panama-flagged tanker EXCELLION moored at the facility. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said one person was injured, while President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that a separate strike hit a gas distribution station elsewhere in the region. Video shared by emergency workers showed towering flames and thick smoke billowing from the depot as crews battled the fire into Wednesday morning. Russia’s Defence Ministry said the operation targeted port infrastructure used to supply fuel to Ukrainian forces. In a related statement, Moscow claimed to have destroyed 42 Ukrainian drones overnight, without specifying locations. Kyiv’s energy ministry warned that the latest bombardment underscores a wider campaign against energy assets, which it says tallied nearly 3,000 strikes since March.
