Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy flew into Washington late Sunday with an unusually large delegation of European leaders, seeking to present a united front as the group tries to accelerate negotiations to end Russia’s war. On Monday he held back-to-back meetings at the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump—first a bilateral session in the Oval Office at 1:15 p.m. Eastern, then a 3 p.m. multilateral discussion in the East Room. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Keir Starmer, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Finland’s Alexander Stubb and NATO chief Mark Rutte joined the talks after conferring with Zelenskyy earlier at the Ukrainian embassy. The leaders are pressing for durable security guarantees and a road-map toward a comprehensive peace agreement. Speaking alongside Zelenskyy, Trump said the United States and its allies would provide Ukraine with “very good protection” and signalled a willingness to work on a settlement even without a formal cease-fire. He added that he intends to telephone Russian President Vladimir Putin after the White House meetings and repeated his interest in convening a trilateral summit "if all goes well." Zelenskyy thanked Trump for “personal efforts to stop the killings,” called the Oval Office exchange "very good," and reiterated that any accord must deliver lasting security for Ukraine. European leaders echoed the need for strong guarantees, while France’s Macron floated the idea of a quadrilateral format that would give the EU an explicit role in enforcement. Monday’s diplomacy follows Trump’s 15 August summit with Putin in Alaska, which ended without a cease-fire and left Kyiv concerned it could be pressed into conceding territory. Russian forces underscored the continuing urgency, launching air strikes that Ukrainian officials say killed at least 14 civilians hours before the White House talks. No breakthrough was announced, but Trump described “excellent progress,” and EU leaders plan a follow-up videoconference on Tuesday to assess next steps.
