Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used a visit to the White House on 18 August to underscore his appreciation for continuing U.S. support, thanking President Donald Trump about 11 times during just over four minutes of public remarks, according to counts by the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. The display followed a February Oval Office meeting in which Vice President J.D. Vance had chastised Zelensky for not expressing sufficient gratitude. Ahead of closed-door talks, Trump positioned a large map in the Oval Office depicting areas of Ukraine now under Russian control. Geo News Urdu and French broadcaster TF1 reported that the map showed roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory shaded to indicate Russian occupation after four years of war. The visual prop signalled that territorial questions would figure prominently in discussions aimed at moving negotiations with Moscow forward. Following the bilateral meeting, Zelensky told reporters the conversation was "very good" and reiterated Kyiv’s demand for firm security guarantees. Trump, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin days earlier, said he intends to convene further talks involving the two leaders, while French President Emmanuel Macron called for European participation in any future summit.
