A house fire in Waldorf, Charles County, Maryland, killed four children and two adults on Sunday morning, authorities said. The blaze was reported at about 8:40 a.m. in a two-story residence that housed nine people; one adult managed to escape and two others were not home at the time. Roughly 70 firefighters from the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding companies spent more than an hour bringing the flames under control. One firefighter was taken to a hospital and another first responder was treated at the scene for unspecified injuries. Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire said the fire appears to have started on the right side of the house within an enclosed porch. Investigators have found no evidence of arson, and accidental causes are being examined. Officials had not released the victims’ identities or confirmed whether the home had working smoke alarms as of Sunday evening.
