Florida authorities have charged commercial truck driver Harjinder Singh with three counts of vehicular homicide after an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike left three people dead. Investigators say the 18-wheel tractor-trailer attempted to use a turnaround reserved for emergency vehicles near mile marker 171 in St. Lucie County at about 3 p.m. on Aug. 12. A north-bound minivan struck the trailer and became wedged beneath it, killing a 30-year-old driver and two passengers, aged 37 and 54. Singh was taken into custody by the Florida Highway Patrol and is being held in St. Lucie County on state charges, with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer in place. Under the federal 287(g) program, state troopers also filed immigration paperwork that would allow ICE to take custody of Singh once state proceedings conclude. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said Singh entered the United States illegally in 2018 after crossing the Mexican border, yet later obtained a Commercial Driver’s License in California. “Three people lost their lives as a result of his recklessness,” FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner said, adding that Singh will be deported after any prison sentence is served. The case has renewed scrutiny of California’s policy allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses that are valid nationwide, raising questions about whether other states can restrict recognition of those credentials for commercial trucking on their roads.
This entire story is revolting. - Entered illegally - Gets a CDL from “sanctuary state” California - Brings his Third World driving habits to America - Kills three Americans after an illegal U-Turn on a highway - Nonchalant, remorseless stare as authorities pull the dead https://t.co/NvwpV8eeZM
JAIL WHOEVER GAVE THIS MAN A LICENSE AND GIVE THIS MAN THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE… Harjinder Singh illegally entered the U.S. in 2018 but obtained a California CDL. He made an illegal U-turn and KILLED multiple people… https://t.co/aEnGh3dV6j
Gavin Newsom’s administration gave these alleged killers a CDL. What does @GovPressOffice have to say about that? https://t.co/owBYQNtwYT
