Florida authorities have charged Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Indian national, with three counts of vehicular homicide after an illegal U-turn by his semi-truck on 12 Aug. caused a minivan to slam into the trailer on the Florida Turnpike near Fort Pierce. The crash killed the minivan’s 30-year-old driver and two passengers, aged 37 and 54, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Singh entered the United States unlawfully in 2018 via California and later obtained a California-issued commercial driver’s license, state and federal officials said. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles called his actions “shocking and criminal,” and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on him. He is expected to be deported once state proceedings conclude. The incident has intensified scrutiny of California’s policy allowing undocumented residents to secure commercial licenses. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the state’s attorney general said they are reviewing legal options against California, while the U.S. Department of Homeland Security faulted the state’s ‘sanctuary’ approach. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated a nationwide audit of commercial licensing practices may follow.
