The Wall Street Journal reported on 20 Aug that Elon Musk has quietly shelved plans to launch the America Party, a third-party vehicle he unveiled in July, and is instead considering directing some of his personal fortune toward Vice President JD Vance if the Republican seeks the presidency in 2028. People briefed on Musk’s thinking told the newspaper the billionaire wants to concentrate on Tesla, SpaceX and other businesses and avoid antagonising influential Republicans after contributing roughly $300 million to Donald Trump and GOP candidates in 2024. Musk rejected the account hours later, posting on X that “Nothing @WSJ says should ever be thought of as true.” He did not address whether organisational work on the America Party is continuing or comment on any prospective financial support for Vance. Vance also distanced himself from the story during a Fox News interview late Wednesday, calling the report “completely fake” and saying he has never discussed a 2028 campaign with Musk or any donor. The vice president added that it would be a “huge mistake” for Musk to form a third party and urged him to remain within the Republican fold. The conflicting statements leave the status of the America Party unclear less than two months after Musk promised to field candidates in the 2026 midterms. Neither Musk nor Vance has outlined next steps, and the Journal has not publicly withdrawn its reporting.
