Paul Wiedefeld is leaving his post as Maryland transportation secretary -- the fifth member of Gov. Wes Moore's cabinet to leave their post so far this year. He told me the move is "totally my choice" and he's ready to do other, less-stressful things. https://t.co/d5sIppAugK
Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld will leave his post on 1 Aug., Governor Wes Moore said Wednesday. Wiedefeld, 69, told reporters the decision was his own and that he is ready to pursue less-demanding work after more than four decades in transportation roles, including leadership stints at Washington’s Metro, Baltimore–Washington International Airport and the Maryland Transit Administration. Deputy Secretary Samantha Biddle will take over the Maryland Department of Transportation on an acting basis while Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller conducts a nationwide search for a permanent successor. During Wiedefeld’s two-and-a-half-year tenure, the agency oversaw the response to the 2024 Key Bridge collapse, restarted planning for Baltimore’s Red Line and advanced construction of the Purple Line in the Washington suburbs. Wiedefeld is the fifth member of Moore’s cabinet to depart this year, following the exits of the commerce, health, veterans and juvenile services chiefs. His departure leaves the state managing large-scale infrastructure projects and ongoing debates over how to fund transportation improvements.
