President Donald Trump said he will announce a new Federal Reserve governor and a new commissioner for the Bureau of Labor Statistics within the next few days, tightening his grip on two agencies central to U.S. economic policy and data. The Fed vacancy was created by the unexpected resignation of Governor Adriana Kugler, who is leaving the central bank on Aug. 8 to return to Georgetown University. Trump told reporters he has “several people in mind” for the slot, which could influence the central bank’s stance on interest-rate cuts he has repeatedly demanded. The BLS post opened after Trump abruptly dismissed Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Aug. 1, a day after the agency’s employment report revised previously reported payroll gains down by 258,000 jobs for May and June. White House advisers said the large revision underscored the need for new leadership, while former officials warned the firing could undermine confidence in official statistics. Trump said he intends to pick an “exceptional” replacement for McEntarfer and will unveil both nominations within three to four days. The Senate must confirm the appointments.
